Update: Fox Sports reports that the Cubs will take a hard look at free agent Marlon Byrd who played on the Rangers last year. He plays centerfield and has a pretty decent bat. He also has lots of experience with Rudy Jaramillo who really likes Byrd. At 32 Byrd is younger than Mike Cameron, so he might be a better option despite not being near as good a defender.
The latest Milton Bradley rumor might the most attractive one yet from a baseball ability standpoint. After a brief Luis Castillo scare (not gone yet) and the ever present danger of taking on a bigger contract (Aaron Rowand) we finally get to look at a player who only somewhat sucks at baseball. Kevin Millwood was one of the "other guys" in those brilliant Atlanta Braves rotations of the late 90s despite being a pretty decent pitcher.
Millwood has pitched for the Braves, Phillies, Indians, and Rangers. He has a career record of 155-121 and an ERA of 4.02. He is a pretty average pitcher, but had a resurgence of sorts in 2009. He posted a 3.67 ERA, a 127 ERA+, and a decent 1.339 WHIP. He did that in the tougher American League in a hitters park. 2010 will be his age 35 season and he will be in the final year of his contract that pays him $10 million.
Now Millwood did get lucky last season according to FIP, that 4.80 suggest he might be due for some bad luck. He was worth 2.4 WAR this season and if he posted that again he would be worth his contract. Given the switch to the new league and the fact that the Cubs really need innings early in the season I think that a Millwood-Bradley swap makes a lot of sense.
