UPDATE: On her twitter Cubs reporter Carrie Muskat quotes Jim Hendry that Milton might be back in 2010 and that his 2009 season was a "major hiccup". I'm guessing this is posturing by Hendry, but good news if it really is true.
Fox Sports Ken Rosenthal (who probably hates that he is being talked about on a blog) has a new report up about Milton Bradley possibly being involved in a three-way deal with the Mets and Blue Jays. In this deal from hell the Cubs send Bradley to the Blue Jays who send first baseman Lyle Overbay to the Mets who send the Cubs Luis Castillo. The only good thing here? A 2 year $21 million commitment becomes 2 years $12 million.
Now the deal is called a "longshot" in the report and it seems like the Rays are still the team after Milton the most. The problem is they have no money, and want to give us back Pat Burrell who would become the most expensive pinch-hitter in baseball.
Just to be safe here is a quick look at Castillo. He was/is a decent offensive player. In 2009 he shrugged off a tough start to finish with a .302/.387/.346/.732 line. The OBP is nice and he did have 20 steals which is probably more than the entire Cubs team could ever dream of getting. The problem is his .337 wOBA is hardly above league average (.330) and he will be another year older when he is on the Cubs. Oh, his defense has been in steady decline since leaving Florida and he posted a lovely -10.4 UZR in 2009. His 1.6 WAR is about as good as it will get for him from now on, which means we would be likely to see more production simply by platooning Baker and Fontenot.
At this point I'm going to be praying for Jeremy Bonderman to be the return for Milton, because Luis Castillo and Pat Burrell just aren't going to be very good at baseball.
