Scott Merkin and Joe Cowley have each reported that Kenny Williams is claiming that with the Teahan trade's completion comes Gordon Beckham's move to second base. Teahan will play third, and right field is still in question.
I have no idea why Kenny went out and said this today. I don't think this is in any way written in stone. And I don't think theses thing should happen.
I can't figure out why you would want to take a spot that you have a surplus and move one of your star players to that position. I agree that Beckham has more value as a second baseman than a third baseman, but that does not mean Mark Teahan is the perfect fit to play third. I'm okay with Teahan being Dye's replacement. But for the moment that deal did not fill any holes. All it did was move the possible Rookie of the Year, out of the position he played all season, and into yet another position he has never played permanently.
Because the hole is right still exists, I don't really believe that the Beckham to second, Teahan to third is ever going to happen. There are certainly more outfielders out there that the Sox could make a move for, but I don't see them making a play for anyone better than Teahan.
Therefore I think even with the general manager's comments today, that Teahan will be the Sox right fielder, Beckham will play 3rd, and Nix or Lillibridge will play 2nd.
But either way, this offseason, which was projected to be very slow for the Sox, got off to an amazingly rapid start. So who knows what's going to happen as we move forward.
